WHAT ARE EMOTIONS ??

according to my beloved Oxford dictionary, emotion = a strong feeling such as love, fear or anger; the part of a person's character that consists of feelings.
It may seem as simple as it is. every mentally sound person would understand its definition as a noun.
but. psycologist, bahaviourists, evolutionay biologists, sociologists, etc. cannot yet agree on a clear definition. is an emotion a mood, a feeling, an impulse, a neurochemical event, or all of the above ?? you may feel that emotions come from thoughts and instincts. but could it be that because of emotions you think and intuit?

verbal skills and rationality may be what make us so smart, but it is our emotions and empathy skills that make us brilliant, decisive, and compassionate human beings.
though empathy is a normal human ability, most of us learn, at a young age, to hide, squelch, or camouflage our emotions in social situations.
we catch on very quickly to the fact that most people are inauthentic with one another - that they lie about their feelings, leave important words unsaid, and trample unheedingly over each other's obvious emotional cues. this makes learning to speak a process of learning not to speak the truth, and attaining an uncanny level of pretense in most relationship.
it is (sadly) true that people will learn to shut off their empathic abilities in order to pilot their way through the social world.

maybe this is why i find it hard to socialize. especially with people who are ingenuine.
